Well, Karl Marx called the working class the "proletariat". The leisure class was called the "Bourgeoisie". He believed that the Bourgeoisie kept the proletariat from progressing and that the proletariat needed to overthrow the class structure through revolution. A person saying, "that is so proletarian" would suggest that he was part of the Bourgeoisie—an elitist that does not accept the pitiful tastes of the masses.
